I was standing at a bus terminal for hours and it made me realize about all the filth that can happen in one of the tiny spots in the world. Also about the majority of Malaysians, regardless of background, that can have very little common sense, including the person who designed the whole terminal. Within a few minutes of standing there, I witnessed a man spit some chewing gum on the floor, which also is the main path for mostly every one, while talking at a public phone. He was fairly educated by the way he dressed, but I guess someone forgot to mention the word ‘rubbish bin’ to him throughout his years of studying. A few kids loitered around the place too. Young kids, barely above nine. One of them has the flu, obvious by the slime that is oozing out of her nose and dropping to the floor. Sweet wrappers being thrown to the floor by the kids were like throwing confetti in a wedding. The situation can briefly explain more about our beloved Malaysians. Spitting anywhere in public places seems to be a common practice. The whole place is covered with rubbish; sweet wrappers, plastic bags, empty soft drink cans, tissues, I can go on and on. The term littering doesn’t seem to be a big issue to anyone. Not to the community. Not to the administration too. Things are bound to happen like this because rubbish bins are very scarce. And if any, it is located so far from the public’s hand. I had to search high and low to find one. Only one person is sane enough to pick all the filthy stuff out of his own will – an insane man. He wonders about everyday and sweeps the floor, picking up rubbish on the way. Who knows where he dumps it, but at least it keeps the place a little less dirty than it already is. Even an unused ticket kiosk is left with a little souvenir of a bag of moldy and rotten iced Milo from the looks of it. No one bothers or cares as their sense are numbed by ignorance. Even the toilets are not in good shape. Though still functions as a place to answer nature’s call but no flushing is included after the duty.
